The lovely churches, excellent musicians, delicious refreshments and wonderful weather have all been booked for another feast of Baroque music in Bassenthwaite. On Friday evening, St John’s will be filled with the virtuosic creations of Czech composer Jan Dismas Zelenka (1679-1745). He was held in high regard by J S Bach for his mastery of counterpoint, his daring harmonic twists and extensive use of syncopation. Bach and Buxtehude’s works rightly take pride of place in Saturday’s concerts, together with motets by J S’s cousin Johann Ludwig (he proved popular at last year’s Festival!), Kirnberger, Krebs and Homilius. We look forward to welcoming regular and first-time visitors to this friendly Festival in an inspiring and stunning setting.
Zelenka psalms and Lamentations for 10 voices, strings and continuo
Organ and cello music by Buxtehude, plus a cantata for soprano solo, violin and continuo
Motets for 8 voices and continuo by J S Bach (Jesu, meine Freude), Johann Ludwig Bach and three of J S’s pupils.
Refreshments and toilet facilities will be available at all concerts.
